Our friends at Brennan and Rogers Estate Planning, Elder Law, and Probate Lawyers, reached out to Great Northern Builders to ask if we would be willing to share information that would go out in a newsletter that would help Brennan and Rogers clients learn more about home renovations to prepare to age in place.
A client of Brennan and Rogers received the newsletter and read about GNB and our specialty of Aging-In-Place home renovations. They got in touch with GNB to learn more about future proofing their Wells Beach home.
The home had a great footprint for aging in place modifications. The main home already had laundry on the first floor level, but it only had a ½ bath with no ability for shower or bathing on the first floor.
The home also had a large office space addition that was added on to the home in 1995. This ~900 square foot space also had an existing ½ bath with no shower.
In collaboration with GNB, design ideas were discussed and ultimately it made the most sense from a logistics and cost perspective to renovate the office space addition and turn into an aging in-place one bedroom apartment.
The project would modernize the space to serve as comfortable living quarters for guests in the near term, but would provide the ability for single floor living for the homeowners in the long term.
The 900 square feet was gutted down to the studs. New plumbing for the expansion of the bathroom, as well as lines for a small kitchenette, had to be trenched into the existing concrete pad.
The finished project includes a spacious queen size bedroom, full bathroom, and large open living area with the inclusion of the small kitchenette with wet bar.
The open living area is accented by a tongue and groove wall installation that is painted a velvety deep blue with gray undertones to match the hue of the maple Medallion Cabinetry installed at the wet bar. The navy blue cabinetry is carried through to the vanity in the bathroom as well.
The homeowners also included the installation of solar panels at the same time as their large renovation project.
