Established in 2002, Great Northern Builders provides creative, timely, and green-friendly solutions for home remodeling projects, while maintaining the rich character that defines New England architecture.

The Team

Great Northern Builders, Inc. has developed into one of the premier design/build remodeling companies in southern Maine. Owner and designer Len Bogh discovered early on a passion for working with existing spaces to create beautiful and lasting solutions for his clients’ home remodeling needs. Each project that Great Northern designs thoroughly blends the distinctive character of the house they are working on along with their customer’s unique vision, ultimately producing a rewarding remodeling experience.

Len, his wife Maya, Great Northern’s business manager, and their Project Manager, Scott Buchanan, work closely with their clients to ensure an enjoyable and smooth process, from initial design consultation to final walkthrough, and beyond.

Our aim is for each of our clients to become part of the ever-growing Great Northern family-homeowners who look forward to working with us as a trusted partner in all of their future remodeling needs.

Len Bogh

Len is a fourth-generation Mainer. He traces his roots back to his great-great grandparents who came to Portland from Denmark. Heading west for college, Len majored in history and English at Montana State University. The draw of Maine brought him back and he soon began working as a carpenter on Chebeague Island in Casco Bay. He was fortunate to apprentice with several old school New England craftsmen in his formative years, teaching him time-honored building techniques and enhancing his innate love and appreciation for his craft. Len has accumulated vast experience in all facets of building. This knowledge and passion comes shining through on each and every project Great Northern undertakes.

Maya Bogh

Maya grew up in Montreal, Canada. Her father is from Southern India and her mother, from Quebec’s Eastern Townships. She grew up traveling in Canada and the US, as well as India, and Australia. Maya graduated with Honors in Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism with a minor in Biology. After graduation, she worked for Fairmont Hotels in Mont Tremblant, Quebec. It was here that she developed her skills in maintaining the highest degree of client satisfaction.

After five years, it was time to return to a real love – teaching horseback riding at a girls’ sleep-away camp in Poland, Maine. It was there she met Len, who was helping to build a new horse barn with Pennsylvania Amish Timber Framers. Immediately star-crossed, they soon married.

Maya’s role in Great Northern began with organizing Len’s records and bookkeeping responsibilities. Over the years, it has evolved into a true partnership. Some of the many areas Maya handles include: legal matters, contracts, human resources, and various trade associations both locally and on the national level. She is laser-focused on maintaining structure, so clients and trade partners alike receive what they need, when it was promised. Achieving the highest level of client satisfaction is always Maya’s first priority.

Scott Buchanan

Scott is a talented and creative craftsman who takes a great deal of pride in his work. With a degree in Architectural Engineering Technology and a decade of experience in home renovation, he has both the skills and knowledge to handle just about anything that pops up as a project progresses. Excellent communication skills with both the client and the office ensures a smooth project from start to finish. As a lifelong artist, Scott's eye for aesthetics blends well with his practical understanding of construction fundamentals. The results are projects that are both highly functional and visually appealing. He looks forward to adding you to Great Northern’s growing list of satisfied customers.

Melanie Merz

Melanie Merz is the Project Developer for Great Northern Builders and is the first person you’ll hear from when you reach out to GNB to schedule an appointment. Melanie usually goes by Mel and lives in South Berwick with her husband and 2 young children. Mel grew up in the Seacoast and loves everything about living in Maine and raising a family in South Berwick.

Mel enjoys her role as cheerleader for Great Northern Builders and shares the beauty of their work far and wide in places like our print newsletter and our social media channels. You’ll hear from Mel throughout your project and she’ll always follow up once the production is complete to learn how it all went.

Mel graduated from the University of New Hampshire and has spent the la st decade marketing for small businesses in the Seacoast. When Mel is not feverishly typing on her laptop or phone, you can find her outside somewhere, probably hiking with her family.

Allison Perreault

Great Northern Builders is excited to introduce our new Operations Coordinator Allison Perreault. Allison joined the GNB team in early 2023.

In Allison’s role as Operations Coordinator, she is essential in supporting all active projects, as well as those in design. Allison often accompanies clients on visits to showrooms to assist with product selections.

Allison loves her role as Operations Coordinator because it allows her to be involved in a variety of areas of the company – no two days are ever the same! From working directly with clients, to tracking project bills and budgets, to selecting office decor, she loves the different aspects of the company and projects she’s able to be a part of.

Allison is drawn to this industry as she has a deep appreciation for history and restoration, as well as loving to solve problems, so a design build company that does a large amount of renovation projects is a perfect fit. She loves blending the old with the new – keeping parts of history while also incorporating modern conveniences to solve a variety of problems.

Whether Allison is working or keeping up with her two boys, she is always on the go. Several nights a week you can find her reading to her younger son at a karate dojo while her older son does his classes, and other nights she’s home enjoying quality time with her family. On the weekends, she enjoys family days going to visit local friends or taking the kids to a playground.
