In late 2019, a new client knew they needed a home remodeling designer for their project and turned to Great Northern Builders to update an existing South Berwick property to accommodate the homeowner’s parents who would be moving to Maine up from Massachusetts. Two concepts came to the forefront, adding a self contained sleeping wing to the existing structure or building a new accessory dwelling unit on the property. The property had some zoning limitations which required extra care given it’s proximity to a cemetery. In the end, the family chose an addition to the existing home which would give the parents their own space, but also include total overhauls to two rooms within the original layout.
Why work with a home remodeling designer?
Working with a home remodeling designer as a part of the design build process helps streamline the design – construction timeline and overall scope of work. Part of this project was to update the existing primary bathroom. The space was gutted and expanded to become a true bathing oasis. The 100 square foot room was dormered and expanded to over 200 square feet. The new room includes laundry facilities, built-in shelving, walk-in shower with dual shower heads including a rain water output and the pièce de résistance, an MDI freestanding oval shaped soaker tub.
The original kitchen would serve as one of the connections between the old and the new wings of the home. Figuring out this connection is best done with a home remodeling designer. The space was badly in need of an update so it was brought down to the studs and completely rebuilt as part of the project. The U shaped layout remained, but the cabinets were upgraded to Kabinart raised panel cherry cabinetry. The warm wood toned cabinets are complimented with a modern white subway tile backsplash, white quartz countertops, white ceramic floor tiles, and stainless KitchenAid appliance package.
The new space for the homeowners’ parents includes a half bath, main level laundry facilities, large living area with additional second floor loft, and the master bedroom with walk in closet and accessible en suite.
The charm of the existing home has carried through into the new modern area to make sure mom and dad feel right at home in their new space.
“We are very happy with the space. Thanks to you and all the GNB team for the superior quality of this project.” RP, South Berwick
